Hi

HISTORY of the

Washington County Retired Teachers Association
affiliated with Maryland Retired Teachers Association

Compiled by Miss Catherine Schnebly

Preface
In 1955 a group of retired teachers organized this association called the Retired Teachers of Washington County Association (WCRTA). They got their direction from the Maryland State Retired Association (MRTA). The goal has always been to present information to retirees who had worked in the education field, and to help them receive the help they needed to make their retirement satisfactory. It is possible that this information herein is not complete or exact. But we have tried with the help of minutes of past meetings and remembrances of retirees to make this an interesting document. Always we have tried to make it nostalgic to members who like to remember.

EPILOGUE

Since the organization ofthe Washington County Retired Teachers Associations, it has served as an informative and a social outlet for retirees. The group has kept members in touch with legislation related to education and senior citizen affairs. It has worked for enactment oflaws that affect seniors and has kept contact with legislators of the state and county. It has encouraged young people to enter the education field with the scholarships. It has kept in touch with members who are sick and families who lost members by death. It has conducted a program of tours that go to concerts and plays and tour regions of our country for sightseeing and education. It has also been a social contact for retirees who enjoy being together for fun and good food. All in all, it has kept retired teachers in touch with life.
